Fun Ideas using Blocks

Today I will share some ideas I came up with for using blocks as a learning tool. I was at a Target store and I came across these chalkboard blocks. 

Immediately, I knew I could use the blocks for many engaging and educational activities. I will share them with you and hopefully you will also find then useful and fun!

Activities:

1.      Use the blocks for helping children to count in Spanish or the target language:

 Kids love manipulative play activities!  Have kids build a tower while counting in the target language from 1 to 10.  

 Challenge students to build the tower as high as they can without it falling. A good number is up to ten but if they can go higher, great!

You can do variation by having children build towers counting by two’s, by five’s or by ten’s depending on your child’s level or grade.

2.      Use the blocks for forming words:

This is another great activity for manipulative play. Children are engage forming words in the target language. Using your God given creativity, you can come up with lots of ideas on games for forming words with the blocks.

3.      Use the blocks for teaching the alphabet and syllables in the target language. Great for creating phonological awareness. 

4.      Story cube games:  Use them  for creative language development by allowing and encouraging children to create their own stories. 
For older children you can play conjugation games by gluing different actions on the cubes for students to conjugate. For this activity check out my previous post Conjugation Cubes. 

The uses are endless! They can be use for teaching, reinforcement and practicing vocabulary, shapes, actions, instruments, animals, any subject you could think of.

If you are wondering how I made the numbers, letters and so on for the cubes, I created the numbers, letters, etc. and using the Xyron Creative Station,  I made stickers and glued them on the blocks!

The box the chalkboard blocks came in did not have the dimensions so I measured them and they are 1.5 inch in width, length and height.

Tarjetas para Emparejar Sonidos y Letras

Tarjetas para Emparejar Sonidos y Letras

Las tarjetas para emparejar sonidos y letras es un material auxiliar para el desarrollo de la conciencia fonológica.

Estas tarjetas fueron creadas con el propósito de ayudar a los niños en las siguientes formas:

·         En la discriminación de los sonidos: Los niños reconocen los sonidos que representa cada letra.

·         En el incremento del vocabulario: Los niños aprenden nuevas palabras así aumentando su vocabulario.

·         A estimular el lenguaje: Creando juegos de sonidos, imitaciones y repeticiones estimula el lenguaje.

·         En la pronunciación correcta de las palabras: Ayuda y motiva a los niños que no hablan mucho a pronunciar los sonidos y palabras.

·         En las dificultades fonéticas: Las tarjetas pueden ayudar a corregir fallas en la articulación y pronunciación.

Es mi deseo que éstas tarjetas ayuden a los niños a relacionar los sonidos con su representación auditiva y visual y así prepararlos para la lectura.

Algunas ideas y actividades que recomiendo:

1.     Tenga una cesta con distintos juguetes y haga el sonido inicial de algo dentro de la cesta. Permita que el estudiante saque el juguete que empieza con ese sonido. Como variación pueden ir por todo el salón de clases o en la casa buscando objetos que empiezan con ese sonido.

2.     Mostrar un objeto o imagen. Motive a los estudiantes a pronunciar su sonido inicial.

3.     Crear juntos láminas con objetos que empiezan con el mismo sonido. Juntos pueden recortar de una revista y pegar en papel de construcción las figuras.

Hi and thanks for stopping by! Today I will share some fun ideas and activities teaching numbers to children. These ideas and activities are appropriate for ages 4 to 8.

I was at a CVS pharmacy the other day and I came across this cute and fun portable snack container. What made this container even more attractive was the fact that it is one of the kid’s favorite sesame street characters.  It was Elmo! Immediately I thought this would be fun to use not as a snack container but as a fun activity for students for learning and reinforcement; and I was not mistaken!

So I took it to my next class, and we all had lots of fun!

Today I will share what we did and other activities you can use with your students.  

I have been teaching my students numbers. With my four and five year old students my goal is to have them recognize and say the numbers in Spanish in random order. For this to take place I decided to select a group of numbers to work with at a time. These are the numbers I chose: 1, 5, 8, 15, and 18. But you can choose any group of numbers. First, I started with 1, 5, and 8 and after students were well familiar with those numbers I added 15 and 18. 

We did activities 1  & 2. 

Activity 1: Put the selected group of numbers inside the snack container. Have students sit in a circle. Put some music on or play a percussion instrument as the children passes Elmo’s head around. You can say in Spanish: “Pasa la cabeza de Elmo”. When the music stops, the person with Elmo’s head takes out a number and say it. And so on until everyone gets a turn.

Activity 2:  Instead of having the students pass Elmo’s head around, you can gently throw the head to a student. The head is already shaped like a ball so it’s very appropriate for throwing. This one is their favorite. Select a student to throw the head to and have the student take a number out and say it in the target language. 

Activity 3: Put one number inside of Elmo’s mouth. Student gets turn guessing the number.  You can say something like this: “qué número hay en la boca de Elmo?” The first student to guess the correct number gets some type of manipulative. (stickers, buttons, dry peas, pet counters, foam counters, bear counters, etc). At the end have students count in Spanish their manipulatives. Have them practice by saying in Spanish as an example: “Tengo cinco”.

Activity 4: This one is similar to activity 3 but instead of putting numbers inside Elmo’s head you can use small miniature objects or small cards with vocabulary images on it. You can ask your students: “¿qué hay en la boca de Elmo?” then you can answer by saying: “en la boca de Elmo hay una silla” or “en la boca de Elmo hay un carro azul”, while taking it out to show them, etc… Kids will have fun with this activity but at the same time they will be learning not only isolated words but also how to use the language for asking and responding.

You can use it for giving commands. For example  you can give commands such as: “abre la boca de Elmo”  “saca un número” “cierra la boca de Elmo”.

You can use these activities not only with numbers but with shapes, colors, words, food, etc…any topics or subject you are teaching. It would be fun also to use it with foods.

Because I work before hand with a selected group of numbers, when doing these activities children already know the numbers. It’s not usual for a student not to say the correct number.  These activities are just reinforcement of what they have already learned.

You can purchase Sesame Street snack containers at pharmacies, Wal-Mart or on Amazon. They even have the Cookie Monster head. I already purchased it. Will share further on how it goes! J

Spanish Lesson Plans for Teaching Colors                               part 4 

                                              

Welcome back!

Today I’m sharing the last session for teaching colors to preschool students ages 2 &3.  

I mentioned at the very beginning that on our last session I will include activities for evaluation.  Evaluating your students is important because it determines if the purpose and objectives have been met. The evaluation should be related directly to the objectives of the lessons.

Even though most of the activities in the lesson plans can serve as an “informal evaluation”, the evaluation suggested here is a little more in dept and direct.

Here are some ideas of evaluation activities you can do with your two and three year old students concerning colors:

·         Showing flash cards in different sequence for student to name.

·         Asking student to find a specific color or colors.

·         Asking student to take out the color he or she hears

·         Pointing to  specific colors

·         Stepping on specific colors

Make these activities creative and fun. While children are engage in these various activities it will serve as an information tool for you to know which student needs more attention with what. These evaluation activities may inspire you to create more activities to help those who need it.

Consider the fact that evaluation is a continuous and on-going process, therefore selecting the appropriate tools and activities are necessary for providing accurate assessment.

I created an evaluation sheet to assess student’s progress. There are two versions: One in English and one in Spanish.

Spanish Lesson Plans for Teaching Colors

Have you ever been looking for new and fresh ideas to teach your preschool students Spanish? Or maybe you really don’t have the time to search the internet or go through books to find something new and interesting to do with your students. Well, if that’s your case, I have been through the same experience too. So here is what I thought of doing to help teachers in the same or similar situation. For the next couple of months or so I will share with you my own personal lesson plans I use with my students.  

Today I’m sharing the first of four lesson plans to teach colors to preschool students ages 2 & 3.

The ideas and activities that are in these lesson plans have been used with my students with positive results.  I hope you find these lesson plans useful.

This lesson plan and those to follow includes the following:

1.      Pedagogical Purpose: Clearly express what is going to be taught.

2.      Learning Objective: This provides the answer to the question: “what is it your students will learn in Spanish that they did not know before”. It also makes clear the outcome you are seeking; and most importantly, basing on the learning objective you can evaluate your student’s progress.

3.      Activities for Teaching: Are ideas and materials that will be used for teaching the subject.

4.      Activities for Reinforcement: Provides hand-on-activities and worksheets for reinforcement.

In the fourth session of each lesson plan I will include activities for evaluation. This will help you track the progress of your students and point out who needs more attention in specific areas. 

The lesson plans include a section on your left with all the materials you will need to teach the lesson; and on the right there is a section for teacher's note.
